Need Some help With the Cleaning?

Friday, May 11th, 2012

Are you tired of working all week, only to have to come home at the end of the day and start cleaning and ironing?

Maybe you leave it till the weekend, and then fit it in amidst the shopping, cooking, washing, gardening, and taking little Sophie to dancing class and Sam to Football.

Are you too exhausted to spend any time doing things you would really like to do, relaxing, spending time with friends & family, taking up that hobby you’ve been promising yourself for the past few years?

Maybe the thought of having a cleaner has crossed your mind from time to time, but maybe you think you can’t afford it, haven’t got time to arrange it, are afraid of the thought of trusting a stranger, or simply don’t know how to go about it?

Well – you do have a couple of options open to you:

1) Arrange it yourself

* You can place an advert in the local shop or newspaper and wait for the phone to ring.

* Then you arange for the prospective cleaners to come to your home whilst you interview them.

* Next you write off to their former employers for references and wait a few weeks to get the replies.

* Finally you take the plunge and employ one of the cleaners you have checked out.

Now – if you are VERY Lucky you will have chosen a good, reliable cleaner who will clean for you diligently and faithfully for many years to come.
It is, however, extremely likely that you may not be satisfied with your first choice, she may not be up to your standards, may be unreliable, and worse than that may even accidentally damage something that you will either have to pay for yourself or claim on your house insurance policy.
Then you must start the whole process over again.

2) Use the services of a Domestic Cleaning Agency

* A Good Domestic Cleaning Agency will take all the hassle and hard work out of the equation for you.

* They will do all the advertising, interviewing, and vetting of cleaners for you, and provide an honest, reliable cleaner for you on the day and at the time most suitable to your requirements.

* If your regular cleaner is on holiday or off sick they can send you a temporary replacment, or if you are not happy for any reason they will replace your cleaner until you are fully satisfied.

* They will also have insurance cover in place.

Yes, it is true that you will pay a little bit more than if you arranged your own cleaning, but it need not be a lot more, and for the service you receive it is well worth it.

So what are you waiting for?

The sun creates thermal energy at no cost to you, and with your household appliances being run by it, that will make a big difference it your monthly electricity bill. Solar systems come in a variety of sizes so it is easy to customize a system to cater to your specific energy needs.

Solar panels are comprised of multiple solar cells that capture the thermal energy produced by the sun and convert it into useable energy. They are very durable and require little maintenance after they are installed. In the last ten years, solar panels have become a lot cheaper and far more efficient and effective, but the start up cost can still be a little hard to swallow for most people. All About Septic Tank Maintenance

Tuesday, May 8th, 2012

Your septic tank is not doing what it’s supposed to? The problem could be anything from clogged pipes to overflowing of waste from the tank itself. Any problem that arises cannot be handled by the home owner itself and one needs to hire the services of a company that knows all about septic tank maintenance. Lawrenceville householders don’t waste any time when they realize that the septic tank hasn’t been serviced for ages.

Your relatives and friends will give you a lot of advice when it comes to selecting a particular company. However, you need to conduct some research by yourself too. Always opt for a company that is an active member of the Better Business Bureau (BBB). This will ensure that you will receive nothing less than the best when it comes to maintaining your septic tank. If you come across a company that is affiliated to the BBB then you don’t have to worry about the quality of service they offer.

Quick service is what you require when your septic tank is not up to the mark. Some well known companies offer all their customers a 60 minute service guarantee. This means that they will respond to your call within an hour of you calling them up. This is highly beneficial especially if you are facing an emergency. For example, if your septic tank is blocked and waste is overflowing into your bathroom then you can call such a company up for quick assistance. The company you hire should also provide service throughout the year. There are one or two companies in Lawrenceville that are available 364 days a year at any given time!

Many home owners pick a particular company depending upon what other people have to say about them. This is a normal thing to do as you would obviously trust a company that has provided others with top class service.

While browsing through the official website of a particular company always keep your eyes open for awards and achievements. Such awards are given to those companies that are recognized for their all round customer service. As a home owner you should trust such a company with all your sewage problems.

When it comes to septic tank maintenance, Lawrenceville householders make sure they select only the best in the business. This isn’t an easy task as you have to find out about the company before you pay them for their services.

Painting wood trim!

Monday, May 7th, 2012

Painting wood trim can be a real pain. I have run in to this problem many times in my painting career. Painting wood whether it is bare of already finished can be a real pain. However, the following tips have helped me when I get stuck painting wood trim.

1. Bare wood trim- I strongly suggest using an oil based primer that is made for bare wood. Bare wood can really suck in a coating and a primer coat is essential for proper adhesion, coverage, and stain blocking. Bare wood (especially if it has nots) has a tendency to release the sap and moistures from the wood. Without a proper prime coat your topcoat of paint will be yellowed in no time! Sometimes 2 coats of primer are necessary followed by 2-3 coats of a quality topcoat oil or latex paint.

2. Wood trim finished with stain and polyurethane. This is tricky because the smooth finish of the polyurethane does not give the pain anything to grip to. To fix this situation you will want a fine sand paper or sanding block. Using the sand paper, go over all of the trim sanding it lightly to moderately. This will rough up the surface and assist the primer in gripping to it. Once this is done I would suggest using an oil primer, as the adhesion and stain blocking seems to be better with oil products. Finally, topcoat with the oil or latex paint of your choice.

3. Painting wood with latex that is already painted with oil. If you want to accomplish this then I would suggest using a bonding primer to cover the coating of oil based paint. Then you are free to use a latex paint of your choice. You can find bonding primer in both oil and latex bases. Either one should work fine. If you don’t mind putting in a little bit more effort then scuffing up the surface with some sand paper before applying the primer coat is a good idea, though not necessary.

Easy To Follow Tips On How To Organize Your Closet

Sunday, May 6th, 2012

Are you afraid to open your closet? Afraid you might get buried under everything you have stuffed in it? If that’s the case, maybe it’s time to organize your closet.

Wouldn’t it be great if in the morning you could go to your closet to get dressed and be able to find just what you’re looking for? If you organize your closet you will make this possible.

The very first thing you must do is empty your closet. Take an inventory of everything you have. Make 4 piles of what to keep, give away to family or friends, sell and donate. Now for the hard part, you must get rid of what you don’t want.

A lot of people use the one Year Rule: if you haven’t worn it in the past year, toss it out. Some people will keep clothes or items they haven’t used for more than one year, this is a good time frame that works well for some, but not all.

Now, you’ll want to think about each section of the closet and how you want to organize everything that you’re planning on putting back. Make a note of everything you’re keeping, and keep like items together.

Example: sweaters with sweaters, dresses with dresses, pants with pants etc. Labels are a good idea if you’re using shelves and or bins to help get your closet organized.

After you’ve sorted and categorized everything, begin putting them back in your closet so it makes the most sense to you. Example: arrange your clothes by garment type or by season or color or by practicality. You could have one section for the special occasions, one for everyday, one for work, one for play.

If you don’t have sufficient space, think about investing in some plastic container bins, shelves and shoe racks to help you arrange shoes, sweaters, exercise clothing or any other items.

You can also make use of the back of the closet door for hanging ties, scarves, belts, purses or any other accessories. You can also add another clothes rod. If you hang your clothes by height you will gain some valuable space.

Having an organized closet will save you time and lower your stress since you will know exactly where to find everything as well as where to put them back. You may also discover you’re saving money by not buying items you already own now that you can see everything in your closet.

The best thing of all, your new, clean and organized closet will certainly make it a joy getting dressed each morning.

FSC™ Certified Ipe Decking Delivers

Saturday, May 5th, 2012

What is FSC™? FSC™ stands for Forest Stewardship Council. This non profit organization is recognized as the most credible international system in forest management. Their certification is the only one recognized for LEED rating on commercial and residential projects for wood products. FSC™ certified Ipe decking is fast growing in popularity due to it’s multi-facet properties. They include janka hardness of 3640, fire rating class I (same as concrete and steel), resistance to insects, mold and fungus (no chemicals here) and longevity of 40 plus years with no maintenance products. What is not to like.

What does it take to be FSC™ certified? Well, that can go into heavy details but here is a fraction of the commitment that is involved. The company must be willing to implement additional policies, procedures, rules, time and monies that solely pertain to FSC™. This involves hiring an FSC™ accredited certification company that implements audits, report misuse or abuse, approve or deny application of the FSC trademark on products and off products and assist company in utilizing FSC™ responsibly. Audits are conducted annually and re-submission is needed every 5 years. Mills for example must have a specifically designated area solely for storage of FSC™ wood. Once in operation for milling the machinery, forklift and area must all be labeled thoroughly and specifically for anyone who enters to know only FSC™ products and production is allowed. Why is this important? The purpose for this is to cut out improper management of our forests.

Why Ipe? As stated above, Ipe has a janka hardness of 3680. In comparison to California Redwood at 420, this hardwood is 8 times the hardness. Ipe is naturally resistant to insects, mold and fungus, so no need to put chemicals on it. It is naturally recyclable, self sustaining and renewable. The longevity of Ipe decking is 40 years and over 100 years with a UV inhibiting deck oil. Ipe rating surpasses the minimum required for wet areas based on Americans with Disability Act requirements for static coefficiency of friction used by commercial projects for slip ratio on flooring.

Put the two things together; FSC™ certification and Ipe decking and you get the best decking available. Nothing else can quite capture the natural beauty of real wood and without the worries of chemical outgassing and now with reassurance of a responsible forest certification.

Mice Control In 4 Easy Steps

Mice are known home wreckers, don’t let them harass you and your family. Mice urine and feces are sources of disease. Follow these Texas Mice Control steps to protect your home and family.

1. Don’t Let the Mice into Your Home. Make your home mouse-proof. Secure your home by tightening the screens on your windows. Not only can mice climb vertically, but they also can jump twelve inches high. Mice can meander through tiny openings as small as a quarter inch wide. So plug up all cracks and openings, including spaces around vents, drain pipes, and holes that phone lines or computer cables go through. Use durable materials such as steel wool or sheet metal. Do not use soft materials. Mice can chew through any material softer than their teeth — be vigilant because they have very strong teeth.

2. Get a Cat. A good mouser can help keep the mouse population down — as long as you put it to work before the mice get a chance to settle in and breed.

3. Seal Your Food. Your home essentially provides mice with shelter and food accommodations. So if you deprive them of food, you’ll reduce their incentive to stay. Place rice, cereal, and sweets in durable containers that can be securely sealed. You can also use pet food containers which are great storage mediums.

4. Trap and Poison Tactics. Getting a cat and sealing your food works only if the mice haven’t begun seriously breeding. If they have, traps and poisons will most likely need to be utilized. Snap traps are considerably useful. Surprisingly, Cheese is not as an effective bait as peanut butter or other sweet foods. If you should choose to utilize a sticky trap, keep in mind that you are responsible for killing the adhered mouse. Sticky Traps are thought to be insensitive to mice by many animal groups. If you use poison, make sure you put it in areas where children and pets can’t get to it. Also, because the mouse will go off to die, make sure you don’t mind the smell of a dead mouse decaying between the walls.

Keep Your House Warm on the Cheap

Thursday, May 3rd, 2012

If you’re trying to keep warm this winter on the cheap, read this article to find great tips on keeping the heat in and the bills low. It’s likely that you can do some easy, inexpensive things to improve your home’s energy efficiency and keep it at a comfortable temperature.

Your first step should be to seal up your home’s cracks. There are probably a lot of places where your home is leaking energy. Doors and windows are common culprits. A tube of caulk and package of insulation strips are cheap to buy in the hardware store and can save you many times their cost in heating bills.

Surprisingly enough, one of the ways to keep your home heated is to open a window. Regular ventilation helps your home release moisture and “old” air, thus helping to prevent mold, mildew, rot and other expensive problems. Don’t just keep a window open, though; regularly open windows and doors several times a day to “change” the air and keep your home’s humidity at a moderate level.

Speaking of windows, putting up a plastic barrier can save you plenty in heating bills. A single layer of plastic traps air keeps a warm layer between the interior of your home and the great outdoors. You can always buy thermal windows or install storm covers, which can certainly help, but your humble plastic wrap is definitely a cheap first response.

A thermostat timer is a great way to keep your home at a comfortable temperature while you’re there, but at a lower temperature while you’re away. When at work, on errands or on vacation, make sure you turn down the heat; no sense in heating your home when there’s no one there to appreciate it.

Instead of turning up the thermostat every time you get a chill, practice putting on more clothing. A sweater or extra blanket blocks the cold, is cheap to buy and free to put on. Wearing layers is the best way to keep warm while relaxing in front of the TV or computer.

To help you figure out where energy is escaping, you might enlist the services of a professional. You may be able to get a free evaluation of your home by your local “green” group or power company. This can tell you where to focus your home efficiency improvement efforts.

Your efforts to improve your home’s energy efficiency will not only pay off in terms of lower bills; it will also contribute to the overall energy usage in your neighborhood and city. This can take more burdens off the local environment, so it’s really a win-win situation all around.
